NASA announced Wednesday that Reid Wiseman and Victor Glover, the commander and pilot of the Artemis II mission that carried astronauts around the Moon earlier this year, are stepping away from active astronaut duty.
Wiseman, a retired Navy captain, previously served as a resident of the International Space Station and as NASA’s chief astronaut. Glover, a former Navy test pilot, is heading to California Polytechnic State University, his alma mater, to take on a leadership role there. He is the father of four daughters.
During the Artemis II mission, the crew sought and received permission to name a lunar crater after Carroll, Wiseman’s late wife, who died of cancer in 2020.
NASA has not detailed successors for the two men’s roles within the astronaut corps as of this report.
