Actor Ryan Reynolds drew a wave of criticism online after making comments dismissing nostalgia for the 1980s, arguing the decade is remembered too fondly given the turmoil of the era.
“The 80s was a brutal, brutal time for people,” Reynolds said. “It was a fucking mess and people forget that. It was a tremendous strife. Socio political tensions everywhere. We were still pretty fresh off a Cuban missile crisis, which was only 15-20 years before. It’s a tumultuous period, but you look back at it now and you’re like, ‘Oh, yeah. “Top Gun.” Cocaine!’ Like, ‘No!’ It was really scary.”
The remarks, shared on social media, quickly generated pushback from users who pushed back on the characterization of the decade, pointing to events like the U.S. hockey team’s “Miracle on Ice” win at the 1980 Winter Olympics and the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 as evidence the era should be remembered positively.

Other users offered shorter reactions, including one that read simply, “The 80s were awesome. Not all actors are like this, I promise,” and another comparing Reynolds unfavorably to actor Mark Ruffalo, who has also drawn attention for political commentary.
One reply contrasted childhood freedoms of the era with present-day life, writing that kids in the 1980s were “basically free to do what we wanted, so long as you didn’t hurt others,” and that “our parents left us alone and we played outside.”
Another commenter simply urged Reynolds to stick to his most famous role: “Dude – just be Deadpool. Seriously.”
Reynolds, widely known for playing the wisecracking antihero Deadpool, has generally avoided wading into political or cultural commentary throughout his career. The comments mark a departure from that pattern and have become a talking point across social media in the days since.
