Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon said Monday that President Donald Trump is “basically a communist,” pointing to his administration’s dealings with Venezuela and North Korea as evidence.
Nixon made the remark during an appearance on MS NOW’s “The Beat.” She used the segment to describe her campaign’s ground operation, saying more than 700 volunteers had knocked on doors for her across Florida over the weekend.
“Folks don’t realize, but I am not someone who just popped up overnight. I have been a union organizer and a community organizer in the state for the past nearly two decades, and so I’ve built a really unique, diverse coalition across the state, and people have been leaning in,” Nixon said.
Nixon then turned her attention to Republican Senator Ashley Moody, arguing that Moody is too closely tied to Trump. In making that case, she cited reports of the administration’s role in Venezuela’s oil reserves.
“Ashley Moody is so in total lockstep with Donald Trump. You just had a gentleman on who was talking about how he has taken over Venezuela. That sounds like communism to me. They’re taking over their oil reserves and wanting to sell them off. That is the epitome of what communism is,” Nixon said.
She also pointed to Trump’s past engagement with North Korea’s government as further evidence for her claim.
“She is, you know, kissing up to a president that is basically a communist. He’s taking control of private industries in another country. He’s also cozying up to someone like the guy in North Korea who is a known communist. And so Ashley Moody is bad for Florida,” Nixon said.
Communism is generally defined as a political and economic system in which the state owns and controls industry, property and production. Trump has frequently described himself as an opponent of socialism and communism, a message he has emphasized with voters who have personal or family ties to Cuba, Venezuela and other countries that have lived under leftist governments.
Nixon is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Ashley Moody in a state where a substantial share of the electorate has firsthand experience with communist rule.
